Getting INTRApersonal

nonprofit fundraising

Last week we looked at INTERpersonal communication for askers. Interpersonal communication is an exchange between at least two people. INTRApersonal communication is the mental web created by our thoughts, ideas, feelings, and beliefs. In other words, it's our inner monologue.

It's not enough just to have good interpersonal communication skills to be a successful asker. It's difficult if not impossible to achieve great success as a nonprofit asker without being in touch with your inner self.

The list of intrapersonal skills is long, but an asker proficient in the five included below is a fundraiser who's flexing some serious intrapersonal communication muscle.

  1. Initiative
  2. Concentration
  3. Adaptability
  4. Intuition
  5. Creativity & Spontaneity

There are many ways to improve upon the above as well as other intrapersonal skills. These will give you a strong start.

  1. Make self-reflection a priority
Take a bit of time each day to reflect on your actions, choices, values, and loved ones.
  2. Keep a journal
Journaling can help you connect with a deeper side of yourself. It provides a tangible record of thoughts and feelings to reflect on later (see #1).
  3. Take chances
Taking a chance on something that ends in success can boost your confidence and motivate you to keep trying new things. Even taking chances that don’t work out can lead to important progress.

Are you leveraging your intrapersonal skills in a way that helps you connect with your fundraising prospects better? Which do you need to improve upon?
