The Actor & The Asker: Similarity #5

acting for askers

You may have heard something to this effect before, “acting is all about reacting.” I couldn’t agree more with this statement. Acting and Asking are indeed all about reacting. Based on what responses you get during a visit with a donor or prospect you gauge, you edit, you alter, you change your reaction. The exchange actors have with other actors as well as the exchange an asker has with donors or prospects are BOTH all about give and take. Put another way – REACTING.

Here’s a spot-on quote from Eric Barr shared on his blog actingis.com Acting, Eric shares, “demands that you react and reacting is doing, and doing is the essence of the actor’s work. Reacting to your acting partner and to the given circumstances forces you to take your mind off yourself and put it onto the character and things around you. It requires you to respond and react honestly in imaginary circumstances in ways that are appropriate for the character. It helps you to stop forcing moments and to engage with everything in your character’s world.”

Yes! Absolutely! Put another way, asking demands that you react and reacting is doing and doing is the essence of the asker’s work. Reacting to your donor or prospect partner and to the present circumstances forces you to take your mind off yourself and put it onto the donor or prospect and the things around you. It requires you to respond and react honestly in the present moment in ways that are appropriate to the situation. It helps you to stop forcing moments and to engage with everything in your current environment.

Acting is reacting. Asking is reacting.

So, once you’ve established CONNECTION and EMPATHY with THE OTHER you engage DEEP INTEREST which in turn helps you to REACT more fully and honestly and presently.

Thank you so much for watching and have a great day.
