Figure It Out

one-person business

Throughout my life, from the hallowed halls of Central Michigan University to the intricate nuances of running a one-person business, one piece of wisdom has stayed with me: "Eddie, most things in life are not brain surgery. So, say yes to whatever comes your way even if you're scared you don't know enough about whatever it is. You're smart. You can figure it out." This priceless advice, generously shared by Doris Ramsey, an insightful costume designer I studied with during my undergraduate years, has been the guiding star throughout my personal and professional journeys.

It's a simple, yet powerful concept - the idea of embracing opportunities, trusting your capabilities, and having the courage to say yes, even when you're not entirely certain of the outcome. It’s the ability to view ambiguity not as an impediment, but as a call to action, an invitation to adapt, learn, and grow.

But let me be clear. This "figure it out" attitude is not about reckless leaps into the unknown. It's about measured risk-taking, backed by the confidence in our ability to learn and evolve. Whether it's starting a new business, expanding into a new market, or adopting a new technology, it's about saying yes to the possibilities and yes to the challenge of figuring it out.

However, the choice to "figure it out" is as much about passion as it is about resilience. It's about what gets you out of bed in the morning, what drives you to push your boundaries and what makes the tough days worthwhile. Every day, you need to ask yourself - Do I WANT to figure it out? Does this align with my vision? Does it feed my fire?

As a one-person business owner or someone contemplating the journey, it's critical to identify the opportunities that resonate with you, ones that you're willing to dive into headfirst. Yes, there will be obstacles, and yes, there will be moments of uncertainty, but remember - you are smart. You can figure it out.

Take it from me. I've applied this philosophy to every aspect of my life and career. It's what's led me to where I am today - being my own boss for two decades. Not every step has been easy, but each yes has brought me closer to my goals, fueled my ambition, and shaped my understanding of myself and the world.

Embrace the power of yes. Believe in your capacity to figure it out. I encourage you to take a leap of faith, guided by your passion and fueled by your resilience. Say yes to opportunities, yes to challenges, and yes to the exhilarating journey of carving your path in the world.

After all, most things in life are not brain surgery. You're smart. You can figure it out.
