The What & Hows of Fundraising Data: BONUS

nonprofit data

Over the past several weeks we've taken a deep dive into the what and hows of nonprofit fundraising data. This week we end the series with a bonus post.

We don't collect data just to have it or because someone told us we should (yes, that includes me). The data you collect should inform action. If it doesn't, the time spent gathering, storing, and analyzing will have been a waste. You've reached the point at which data and asking come face to face, each informing the other on appropriate actions.

Here are three specific actions your data can help you take:

  • Use what you’ve learned through data to help you allocate resources and focus on prospects who are most likely to donate.
  • Donors come from all walks of life in all shapes and sizes. Just as two donors will support your organization in different ways, they probably prefer to be communicated with differently too.
  • Use wealth indicators to ask donors for specific, appropriate gift amounts. You can also use data like first, latest, greatest gift to help determine next ask amount.
  • Cultivate relationships with those who show a strong affinity toward your organization and have the financial capacity to give larger gifts.

You've done the good work of data collection and management. Now let it help you and your team make decisions that will further your organization's mission.
