Ed's Journey

Small town values, big time business

This course is my journey in course form with all of the successes of course, but more importantly the failure so that you can learn from my mistakes before you make them.

This year marks my 20th anniversary as a freelancer. My entrepreneurial spirit emerged early. I was probably between 8 and 10 years old. I remember very clearly three jobs I had as a kid. Looking back, these were the gigs that helped me develop my freelancing sea legs.

My earliest freelance gig was picking up corn cobs from a cornfield. The farmer of the land paid me to pick up corn cobs in the fields around our house after the corn had been harvested. He wanted to feed them to his cattle. They were beef cattle. He didn't need those corncobs and I don't remember how much he paid me per bushel, but it sure was nice of him and also taught me the value of hard work.

For my next gig I guess you could say I stayed in the agriculture industry. I picked snap beans at a local farm. I think we got something like $1.00/bushel if that. I did this to earn money for our summer vacation to Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. America's Roller Coast.

My third gig was certainly my most ambitious. I sold greeting cards and stationary door-to-door to family and friends to earn enough money to buy a cheap 35mm camera. I was so proud of that camera and remember the day I received it in the mail.
