One-Person Show...Business

one-person business

Running my business is like performing a one-person show.

My small business is extraordinarily small. It's just me. This is by design. I like it this way.

This is not to say I don't enjoy working with others. I love working with others. That's how I spend much of my day as a coach to nonprofit professionals.

This is also not to say I don't get help from others - accountants, lawyers, coaches, etc. I most certainly look to these good folks when I need help.

What "performing a one-person show" means for my small business is I'm in charge of all the departments that make up a traditional big business.

I'm the:

  • Boss
  • Only employee
  • Frontliner providing services
  • Finance department
  • Bookkeeper
  • Marketing team
  • IT unit
  • Customer service rep
  • Advertising person
  • Human resources
  • Social media manager
  • Website administrator
  • Copy writer
  • Spokesperson

You name it, I do it. I wouldn't trade it for the world. I love it and am thankful to be doing it.

Filling all of these roles and performing the associated tasks just means my systems and workflows need to be well thought out and TIGHT.

In the new section of my blog, One-Person Business, I'll be exploring what it means to perform a one-person show...business. Pulling back the curtain and sharing the ups, the downs, and the sideways of making it happen on your own and on your own terms.

I hope you'll follow along as I share what I've learned over more than twenty years of running a successful one-person business.
