Objectively Speaking

just a thought

We all want something.

When you interact with others you are trying to accomplish something. You have an objective.

Your objective could be as simple as what to eat or as complex as negotiating the sale of a business. The size of the objective doesn't matter. We all want something from others when we engage with them using words spoken, words written, and/or actions taken.

One of the keys to true success and long-lasting satisfaction is how you go about getting what you want.

As you think about working your objectives, ask yourself (and answer) these questions to gauge whether or not they are in alignment with the person you have grown to be and the community you would like to create.

  • What is your super-objective? Think of your super-objective as your overarching goal in life. The thing that drives or motivates you most as you go about your work, your days.
  • What are your smaller objectives? These are short-range day-to-day objectives that ultimately build to your super-objective.
  • What tactics do you use to reach your objectives? In the pursuit of your objectives you take action. Tactics are the actions you take both internally or mentally and externally with others that you feel are going to help you reach your objectives.
  • What obstacles do you encounter? Obstacles are a part of any goal worth reaching. As you encounter new and different obstacles, your tactics change. There is a direct correlation between your ability and willingness to adapt as obstacles present themselves and your level of success in achieving your objectives.
  • What role does your sense of truth and authenticity play in your super-objective, day-to-day objectives, obstacles, and tactics? Operating from a core set of principles that grow from a place of complete consideration for others, good intentions, and a win-win mindset, clarifies your truth, encourages authenticity, and establishes respect for others as well as yourself.

Whether we are aware of it in the moment or not, we all want something from others when we engage with them in one way or another. Understanding and accepting this, while staying truthful, authentic, and respectful can make life a lot less complicated and objectives more attainable.
